Through The Airport

For volunteers that are buddied with an unaccompanied skier through the airport you will meet the athlete at the airport near the check-in desk.

  • You will be given the passport for the athlete. Ensure you retain this in your possession.
  • Check-in your luggage and your athlete’s luggage.
  • Support the athlete through airport security.
    • Remind the athlete about the liquid requirements before going through security.
  • Stay with the athlete through the airport until you board the plane; you may not be sat right next to the athlete but as a group we will all be seated together.
  • At the destination airport collect your luggage and the luggage of your athlete.

Tip

It is a good idea to take a photo of the athlete’s luggage before it is checked-in. That may make it easier to find when we arrive for the trip in the destination country and when we return to the UK.

On Arrival

  • You must ensure that the athlete’s luggage is loaded onto the transfer coach and removed from the coach when we get to the resort.

In Resort

For those caring for an athlete in the resort:

  • On arrival help the athlete unpack, if they require support, and check it has been done.
  • Adjust the thermostat in athlete’s bedroom if required.
  • Advise the athlete not to use the balcony.
  • Look in the bathroom and advise the athlete on how to use the shower, discuss how to position the shower curtain to avoid flooding the bathroom. Demonstrate adjusting the temperature of the shower.
  • Ensure the athlete’s ski pass is placed into the ski-jacket pocket on the sleeve.
  • Each morning:
    • Ensure your athlete is ready for breakfast by a pre-agreed time.
    • Make sure your athlete has applied suncream and lipsalve, and ensure they are dressed appropriately.
    • Make sure they have their gloves, helmet and ski-pass before they put on ski boots.
  • Each evening:
    • Ensure your athlete is ready for dinner by a pre-agreed time.
    • Ensure your athlete has their clothing out for the following ski day to make the morning easier.

Depending on who you’re responsible for you may need to give numerous verbal reminders to ensure the athlete changes clothes as required, showers after skiing, etc.

Make sure your athlete is aware of your room number - write it down for them. This way they will be able to find you if they require support.

At the end of the week check the athlete’s room; ensure nothing has been left behind. This includes checking the boot room.

Parents, Carers and Guardians with Athletes

Below are the expectations for parents, carers or guardians travelling with their athletes.

  • You will support your athlete through the airport, including baggage check-in, as well as through security and in the departure lounge.
  • If you are sharing a room with your athlete, you will provide full off-slope care for them including medication.
    • This includes ensuring the athlete is ready in the morning for the required time.
  • If you have request that your athlete shares with another athlete to promote independence the trip committee will strive to support this.
    • This requires there being the right distribution of rooms and enough volunteers.
    • If your athlete is sharing with another athlete you will not be able to enter their room unless you’re also a registered volunteer with a valid SOGB DBS check.
  • Once skiing starts responsibility for the athletes transfers to the coaching team and tail-enders.
    • Some athlete have enhanced risk assessments; these will be executed and shared with the coaching team.
    • Any discussion regarding fitness to ski will be discussed with the parent/carer/guardian but the final decision is the coach’s.

Photos

Photos should not be shared outside of the closed WhatsApp group that is specific to the trip without prior approval of the safeguarding team. This is to ensure we adhere to the photo consent wishes of the athletes.
