Welcome to Special Olympics West Midlands Ski Group!
The largest group of its kind in the UK today.
The mission of Special Olympics West Midlands Ski Group is to provide year-round ski training and competition for our athletes, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
About Us
SOWM was founded in 2001, with training sessions held at Ackers Adventure in Birmingham every fortnight. All of our special needs athletes belong to a Special Olympics group within the West Midlands. The trainers are all qualified ski instructors, who give their time free of charge.
The number of athletes has steadily increased and we now have around 45 athletes training regularly throughout the year. In addition to the sessions in Birmingham, we have a week of training on snow in Italy every year.
It is anticipated that the number of skiers will continue to rise as more people hear about the group. We will continue to train regularly and to encourage our skiers to compete in Special Olympics competitions in England and Wales. We also encourage them to enter mainstream ski races in the Midlands.
You can find our diary by clicking the ‘Diary’ section at the top of the page.
